What makes a girl a badi? or a whore? I wonder why girls get that ‘label’ anyway. The most common meaning of it could be ‘faseyhain setuvaa kudhin’. May be! well, thats what i get when someone says that word.
Unlike other countries, most of the so called badins in Maldives don’t really act as prostitutes. They don’t usually sell their bodies for sex. However I must not mention the fact that there are girls in maldives whose total concern is sex. But, most of the girls get in to the relationships before they do ‘things’ with their partners. Those ‘things’ are to be kept as a secret between the two of them. From the moment, when the boy (usually) or girl starts talking about it to others, the girl in the picture starts getting the ‘badi’ label. Thats what i think.
Most girls become ‘badi’ after they are being dumped out of a serious relationship. Especially from a relationship in which the girl got a high degree of sexual pleasure. They turn to ‘Only Sex’ mode after they loose hope and confidence of a serious relationships.
What I am trying to say here is there would be a man’s hand in someway behind girls getting the ‘badi’ label. What you say?

as per my understanding ‘badi’ is a label boys and mostly girls use on a girl to piss her off! mostly based on jealousy! mostly used by guys who don’t know now to attract girls and girls who are not gaining any pleasure from their current relationship. this all labeling thing is a social weapon of degradation of status and it has no real meanings! come on, we humans laugh at and talk about celebrities when they break-up, in doing so we feel superior to them… how ironic?
so to avoid this labeling smart Maldivian girls say “i rather be a fonirudi than a badi!”

labeling girls as badi is is a bit childish, i think. it’s like, ’so she dumped you. take it like a man and for once DON’T cry a river!’ *eye roll* most guys tend to not think twice about dumping a girl but if a girl dumps them, then it’s the greatest wrong doing since the Original Sin. when some “loosers” dont wana face the fact that the reason for the breakup is their own problems, they consider this the easy way out and label her “badi” and ruin her reputaion..lol..what a shame..i pity the cowards….
my view is a bit different. i would define someone as badi if she’s the type of person who sleeps around. not those who might have slept with their boyfriends(those who take a bf every four months aint included here :p). yea, theres a guys hand in it. cos come on. when he gets together with her she cant wait to tell him all the secrets and mess ups of her life. he finds out what a ‘badi’ she is but still sticks to her cos its him now thats screwing her. so if he lets go of the free sex he’s jes not a guy. so when they break up she’s called a badi mostly if its the girl who broke up or cheats on the guy. ive hardly herd a case where the guy breaks up with the girl and calls her badi.
so those girls who’s made out with or had sex with like 10 guys or so ofcourse in my book are labelled as ‘badi’.

They talk. They laugh.

They start going out.
Then, Boy cheats on Girl.
Girl gets disillusioned, leaves.
Boy to safe face, tells friends Girl was easy meat.
He doesn’t want to admit he lost the best thing that happened to him. Secretly he still tries to get her back.
Girl makes unwise choices after relationship because she is seeking self assurance. In her mind, Boys – the species – are absolutely worthless. She wants to hurt and use them like she had been used.
And the question is, When boy does it, its cool.. he’s a player.. He’s pimping. And when girl does it, she’s BADI. A slut. A whore. Everyone’s meat.
So the basic reality is, if Boy is having sex with Girl, he should be mature enough to keep what goes on under the sheets, under the sheets. Boy proves his immaturity and unreadiness for sex when he discusses it with his other friends. And because boy discusses these things (often with a sufficient measure of exaggeration) Girl gets labeled.
[Note: this is not a generalization. Think of it as a case study. Because under no circumstances are all Boys to be blamed, and under no circumstances are all Girls perfectly innocent.]

I dont see ‘badi’ as a dregatory term..I mean its all a matter of perception right? If someone gets around.. dates a lot and all its only natural she’d be physicaly involved as well.. and these daysd u cant just kiss one frog and find your prince.. i think uv got to atleast kiss a hundred.. and if that makes me badi.. so be it!
